THE JUNGLE GIANTS: Learn to Exist (2013) ★★★★

Amongst the ever growing multitude of indie pop outfits releasing albums at the moment I feel that this one stands out from the crowd. It contains a number of well-crafted high energy tracks delivered with a carefree and youthful zest. In songs such as ‘Be alone with me’, ‘I am what you want me to be’ and ‘She’s a riot’ you will find both infectiously catchy, hand claps and guitar hooks gleefully exploited. However what sets this album apart are the slower numbers with darker and moodier subject matter. ‘Pair of lovers’, Truth may hurt’ and ‘Devils in the detail’ are tinged with sadness and are honest and sombre. This is one of my favourite Australian releases this year. Overall a playful and fun record but with some depth to it!
